The quake was centered about 11 kilometers northwest of Malibu and occurred at a depth of 11.7 kilometers. It was felt across the Los Angeles area, with reports of shaking in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Downtown Los Angeles.
There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries. However, the earthquake came as a surprise to residents, who had not experienced a significant seismic event in the area for several years.
The USGS is urging residents to be prepared for aftershocks and to check for any damage to their homes or property.
