Panama Shocks United States in Gold Cup Semi-Final
1-1 Draw Sends Game to Penalty Kicks
Mosquera Saves Roldan's Penalty, Carrasquilla Delivers the Win
In a thrilling semi-final matchup at the Concacaf Gold Cup, Panama stunned the United States with a 1-1 draw and victory in the penalty shootout. Despite the Americans controlling much of the play, Panama's resilience and determination proved too much to overcome.
The United States took the lead in the 55th minute when Gyasi Zardes tapped in a rebound from close range. However, Panama responded just eight minutes later with a goal from Aníbal Godoy. The game remained deadlocked through extra time, setting the stage for a dramatic penalty shootout.
Orlando Mosquera, Panama's goalkeeper, emerged as the hero by saving Cristian Roldan's penalty kick. Adalberto Carrasquilla then stepped up and calmly converted the game-winning penalty, sending Panama to the Gold Cup final.
The victory is a major upset for Panama, who had never reached the final of the Gold Cup before. It also marks the end of the United States' reign as Gold Cup champions, which they had held since 2017.
